About the Facilitator

This Compassionate Mind Training for Hoarding and Cluttering Workshop will be facilitated by Chia-Ying Chou, PhD. Dr. Chou is a UCSF-trained specialist in Hoarding. She has been working with individuals with Hoarding and cluttering challenges since 2014. As a therapist, Dr. Chou treats Hoarding by addressing its underlying roots, such as difficulties in emotion regulation, intolerance of uncertainty and distress, shame, self-criticism, undermined self-worth, and psychological consequences of trauma. Besides working clinically, Dr. Chou also provides trainings to clinicians and public talks on hoarding and Compassion Focused Therapy worldwide. To learn more about her approach to Hoarding and her presentation style, check out Dr. Chia-Ying Chou on YouTube.

Who is this workshop intended for?

  • People who self-identify as someone experiencing cluttering or hoarding issues
  • People who are unsure if they have hoarding issues, but seem to have more things than their space can contain, or find it hard to let things go
  • People who are interested in healing from hoarding or cluttering issues from the bottom-up
  • People who have tried traditional Cognitive Behavioral treatment or support for Hoarding and curious about what else is available
  • People who suffer from harsh self-criticism about their 'stuff' but struggle to face and work on it
  • People who 'procrastinate' or seem to be unable to find time to get to sorting and discarding

What will be introduced in the workshop?

This workshop follows theories and exercises of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), an evidence-based approach for different mental health issue that is growing evidence in its effects on Hoarding. This workshop is not psychotherapy in nature. It includes the fundamental educational and skills training in CFT. Specifically, we will cover topics including:

  •  What hoarding is and why do people have this difficulty - based on how the human brain is designed
  • Psycho-education and skills training to help us understand and become more aware of the emotions and mental states related to hoarding
  • A compassionate look at our circumstances - this means facing our issues with wisdom, openness, and heart-felt commitment to help ourselves.
  • Practices to help develop a more encouraging internal dialogue when we try to address our issues.
  • Practices to cultivate a more compassionate relationship with ourselves so we learn to value our wellbeing more than things' wellbeing
  • Practices to help ground, soothe, and encourage ourselves when we feel overwhelmed, so that we can stick to our goals
